Rostering Around

2 Sep

A couple of days ago my September roster came out.

I was waiting with very high hopes as it is my so-called ” top bid” so I’m at the highest priority to get what I bid for. And it worked! (More or less πŸ™‚ )

  • Starting off Sept with 5 days of much-needed leave, plus a couple of extra days off either side. (I’ll be heading to Melbourne tomorrow morning to stay with my cousin, then we’re going to Canberra to visit my Aunt and Uncle and my Grandparents!)
  • Karachi t/a
  • Business Class Upgrade Course (5 days in training college)
  • Rio – Buenos Aires – Rio
  • Jeddah t/a
  • Doha t/a

As you can see one of these is very very exciting….I’m going to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires! I absolutely cannot wait. This is the most bid for trip in the whole company, so I’m very happy to finally have got it!

Not only that, I also have my business class upgrade. Back to training college for 5 days; I’ve already been doing lots of online preparation for it. This means that from October onwards I’ll no longer be working in economy class any more! πŸ™‚

As always feel free to leave me comments with any questions you might have, I’ll try and incorporate them into a blog post!

    Congrats on your upgrade!

How many time will you be spending away from Dubai on that Rio – Buenos Aires trip? It sounds amazing!

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 10:56 #

Thank you! The trip is 6 days I think – 14 hours flying to Rio, then 24hrs layover, 2,5 hrs flying to Buenos Aires, 24 hrs layover, back to Rio for another 24hr layover, then back to Dubai! I’m very excited for it! πŸ™‚

      • Lucie September 13, 2015 at 18:13 #

I see Karachi there πŸ˜€ but i guess Karachi-DXB is just a shuttle flight going and coming back.

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 10:57 #

Yeah it’s just a quick one, around 2 hours flying each way, and probably around an hour on ground for the cleaners and the new passengers to board! πŸ™‚

Hey! I’m from Argentina! So great you’re coming here!! Too bad I’m going to Dubai on Sept 11th to start my training with Emirates!! Otherwise I’d be glad to show you around πŸ™‚
Congrats for this amazing blog (which I read completely!). It’s such a helpful way to know how this work is done and how it is to be living in Dubai working for Emirates.
I hope someday they give a flight working with you. Would be nice to meet you! πŸ™‚

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 10:58 #

Oh wow, congratulations!! Bet you’re so excited to be starting πŸ™‚ Keep me updated on how your training goes, and maybe I’ll see you in the skies! πŸ™‚

Hello Rachel, I discovered your blog a few days ago and I’m totally fascinated with your lifestyle! I have one question for you! Can you please tell me if I need to know how to swim to be able to apply to the Emirates?

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 10:58 #

Thanks for reading, I’m glad you like it! Well you don’t have to swim very much, just during training you have to jump into the pool and be able to tread water, and swim to the edge. Hope this helps! πŸ™‚

You really have to visit this places in Buenos Aires: Teatro ColΓ³n (it’s amazing and you can do the guided visit in only 30 min), La Boca and San Telmo (lots of tango in both places), the legendary CafΓ© Tortoni (and orden chocolate and churros), and by night Puerto Madero is the most beautiful place to have dinner and walk around. Hope you have a great time! Congrats on your upgrade! I love reading your blog!

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 10:59 #

Ahh amazing, thank you for the tips! I wish I had longer than 24 hours there, I’d like to explore as much as possible! Guess I’ll just have to try and bid for it again πŸ™‚

Love love love your blog. Could you please do a post about the pro’s & cons of being a flight attendant. would be interesting to hear about the cons

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 11:00 #

Glad you enjoy it πŸ™‚ I’ll definitely try and do that. Got a busy week coming up with my business class training so I’ll try and do it after that! πŸ™‚

  11. Lily September 5, 2014 at 20:36 #

Hey πŸ™‚ I stumbled upon your blog because I’m hoping to work with Emirates! I stayed up all night reading the whole blog haha! you have such an amazing life I’m so jealous. I was wondering, I have two small ankle tattoos, both about the size of a large coin. How strict are they, do you know other girls that have tattoos that work for Emirates? and also I have a big birth mark on my arm that would show if I wore short sleeves. I’m worried about going to the recruitment and being sent away! I would appreciate your advice so much πŸ™‚ Thanks! Lily

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 11:04 #

Aw thanks so much for reading! Tattoo wise unfortunately they are very strict….nothing allowed that could be visible in uniform. The only thing I could think of is if you wore say compression tights that covered them up and just said you didn’t have any, because otherwise that will definitely be a reason that they wouldn’t accept you 😦 Don’t think the birthmark would be a problem though. πŸ™‚

How are cabin crew assessed at emirates? Like does the purser give you feedback at the end of each flight? Or do you just meet with your manager sometimes?

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 11:06 #

We have so-called “flight reviews” which are filled out by our seniors (not on every flight, just at random) and they can put any positive or negative feedback on there. You can read them online on our portal afterwards. I have only met my manager once during my probation period! I’d only need to see her if I had attendance issues or something very bad happened, haha! πŸ™‚

  13. Rach September 7, 2014 at 04:16 #

    Hey Rachel,
How long had you worked in Economy Class before you were able apply for a Business Class position?

    Thanks πŸ™‚

    • The Dubai Diaries September 11, 2014 at 11:07 #

Hi! I’ve been in the company around 1 year and 9 months πŸ™‚ I got accepted for the training in May or June I think!

  14. Ahmed September 17, 2014 at 21:55 #

    Hello lady,
Just a silly quastion if you dont mind, what is t/a,, is it means turn around flight so that you will be working for the whole round trip… isnt?

and not to forget thanking you for the great blog…

    • The Dubai Diaries September 21, 2014 at 11:53 #

Hi, thanks for reading πŸ™‚ Yes a turnaround is where you fly somewhere, stay in the aircraft while the cleaners come on, and then fly straight back to Dubai! They can be anywhere from 45 minutes to 4,5 hours! I prefer the short ones as you’re back home before you even know it πŸ™‚

  15. Ana October 1, 2014 at 18:05 #

hey, Rachel, when you say you’re based in Dubai, how does it really work? How often do you have to stay in Dubai? How often do you get to see your family? Thank you.

    • The Dubai Diaries October 4, 2014 at 12:45 #

Well I live here, I have an apartment here that the company provides which I share with 2 other girls. I’m here on all my days off (unless I want to go away somewhere) so I’d say I’m here around half the month, depending on which flights I have of course. I see my family a few times a year, if I choose to go home on my leave! πŸ™‚
